Yeah, so?

Now, I haven’t been following it because I really don’t care, but what’s the big deal about videos on Flickr?

I’ve searched for the tags “no” and “video” and came up with a bunch of Pictures.

novideo

Flickr announced on April 9th (I think) about the Videos and today, April 11th, I find 56,327 results on “no video” pictures.

People say it’s going to be the second “YouTube”, that

Flickr is slowly going downhill

Flickr has TOTALLY sold out. It was perfect just how it was in the beginning. Now they’re just destroying it.
FLICKR ADMINS: You are killing something that used to be great. Video-Flickr is the beginning of your swan song.
You used to be cool. What happened?

Hehe  Reading posts on a thread like this amuses me.

Is it really such a big deal? And if you think so, why?

  1. i don’t understand the big deal. personally, i think it’s a great idea. if people don’t want to use the feature, they don’t have to. idg what the fuss is about.

  2. I rly dont care. Ive had my Flickr account since 2004 and I never rly got obsessed with it. I mean, when Photobucket introduced video hosting, I thought: cool, an alternative to Youtube.

  3. Meh. I don’t think I’ll really use that new feature, but I don’t hate either. I don’t know why some people make such a big deal out of it. It’s not like everything else in Flickr is going suddenly become bad because they are now allowing videos.

  4. Are heard there is a 90 sec limit on the videos though. So the idea is meant to be creative in the time limit. I forget where I read that. I don’t care though, I’ll probably never use the feature.

  5. I never used Flickr in the first place because I always upload my photos to my own photo site.. but the video thing isn’t a big deal. It looks like all companies want to go where the money’s at. If they have video, perhaps more users will come to their site = advertising dollars!

  6. I don’t really think it’s a big deal but Flickr means photography to me and not video so I don’t feel that they should change that concept.

  7. I’m not a member of flickr, or, I am, I just never used my account. But, I think flickr should stick to photography, since that is what they’re great at, and let youtube deal with the videos. I don’t think they’ll beat youtube when it comes to videos anyway…

  8. There’s no way Flickr can beat YouTube by only allowing a 90 second video clip. I think the whole thing is kind of silly. I could care less if Flickr lets people upload “videos.” I use it for photos, and what everyone else wants to use it for is their own business. I didn’t even know about the videos until one of my contacts uploaded one on her account. I don’t think allowing videos to be uploaded will ruin Flickr though. I mean really, some people who are “protesting” are they really going to remove all 10,000 of their photos and upload them to another site? I think not.

  9. I don’t get it either, after all it’s easier to post silly pictures than silly videos (i.e. it’s quicker). Then again, I don’t use Flickr =P , but am quite happy to stalk others. Which reminds me, love the picture of you passed out on the bed.

  10. we had perverts uploading photos and now we have perverts uploading videos, so this is not the problem i guess. as much as we used to see crappy photos on explore we started to see crappy videos too. it just gets dispersive, flickr is a treasure for good photographers. videos can be art too, but photos and videos are two different things. i’d like flickr to be a photo hosting website only, i dont see why videos and photos should go together- oh yes, sure, money hehe. i didn’t pay attention to videos and i didn’t get to see a single one so, nothing much changed to me. i am still against videos.

  11. It’s not a big deal at all, in my opinion. People seem to be exaggerating the new feature. The new YouTube? No way…there is a 90 second limit on videos and only PRO accounts can upload things! Not just any ol’ weirdo out there. Just weirdos that pay $25 a year. 😀

“Video on Flickr grew out of the idea of “long photos” and as such, we’ve implemented what might seem like an arbitrary limit of playing back the first 90 seconds of a video.”

“Only “safe” and “moderate” video content is permitted. Your “beautiful wife” should not be moving.”

LOL @ that. XD It seems at least they are highly controlling the whole thing. I don’t think they really WANT to become the next YouTube. I’m sure they are aware that people are afraid they will.

  12. I’m not opposed to it, but it seems like flickr is going downhill with adding videos. Now people will start posting stupid videos of the cat on skateboards. blahhhhh.
